Christian Children's Fund of Canada (CCFC) is a child-focused international development organization based in Markham, Ontario. CCFC is a member of ChildFund Alliance, a worldwide group of 12 child-centred development organizations working in 58 countries to implement lasting and meaningful change for children and families.
Christian Children’s Fund of Canada creates a future of hope for children, families and communities by helping them develop the skills and resources to overcome poverty and pursue justice. For more than 50 years, we have followed the example of Christ by serving the poor regardless of their faith, cultural, and ethnic background.
We dream of a world where every child has a voice and the ability to achieve their full potential.
CCFC at a Glance:
Our History: From One Man's Vision to a Global Partnership
CCFC's roots date back to the late 1930s, when American Presbyterian missionary, Dr. J. Calvitt Clarke, along with Dr. Verent Mills, began working with Chinese war orphans. Moved by their suffering, Dr. Clarke created the China Children's Fund (CCF) in 1938. Less than a decade later, Mills joined as regional director in Shanghai. Born in Birmingham, England, and raised in Winnipeg, Canada, Mills had been a missionary in South China since the early 1930s.
In the 1950s, the organization expanded its work from Asia into the Middle East in the aftermath of the Second World War and renamed itself Christian Children's Fund. By the 1960s, CCF had a global reach, and growing Canadian support led to the creation of Christian Children's Fund of Canada.
We Help Children and More
Christian Children's Fund of Canada is focused on the needs of children for basic necessities such as access to food, water, education, and health care. CCFC meets these needs through an innovative program of child sponsorship that has an impact not only on the lives of sponsored children, but also on their families and their communities. With five forward-looking program sectors — Education, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Health and Nutrition, Sustainable Livelihood Development, and Strengthening Community Organizations, we support communities to become self-reliant. However, in the case of emergencies, CCFC assists with emergency relief.
A Future of Hope Through Self-Sufficiency
CCFC's aim is to create a future of hope. That means eventual self-sufficiency for children and their families.
Many CCFC programs are designed to enable, encourage, and train people to use their own skills and abilities to meet their needs. An important aspect of this approach is small-scale economic development, which assists in the creation of worthwhile small businesses in communities where sponsored children live. We call this Sustainable Livelihoods.
On The Ground: The Strength of Partners
One of CCFC's greatest strengths is its reliance on established local organizations on the ground. Our partners are local organizations in our countries of operation. They are experts in local customs and know the communities better than anyone else; they have the aptitude to deliver solutions. To ensure our program funds are well spent, CCFC staff visit each project site regularly, monitoring progress and results.
