Students Make Changes Felt Around the World

Students of Sharon Ste. Marie's World Issues class learned some shocking statistics regarding the availability of water in the world. Some students were unaware of the fact that there are over 1 billion people who do not have access to clean, safe drinking water.

In a country where, for most, getting fresh, potable water means walking a few feet and turning on a tap, students at St. Boniface Diocesan High School (St. B) were dismayed to learn that some students in Ghana spend up to six hours per day walking in excess of 15 kilometers to fetch water that may make them seriously ill and, in fact, in some cases will result in death. These caring students felt compelled to take action and launched a fundraiser.

A committee was formed; posters were created and put up in the hallways and the campaign was on. Among their fundraising initiatives, the organizers asked any students with part-time jobs to donate the amount of one hour's wages to the cause. Staff and students rallied behind this cause and raised more than $1200.

Thank you Mrs. Ste. Marie and Students of St. B In Winnipeg, Manitoba. Your compassion has improved the lives of an entire community. WELL DONE!
