In an effort to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS among the youth in Ghana, Christian Children's Fund of Canada (CCFC), has launched an HIV/AIDS campaign to create awareness on the HIV/AIDS pandemic and its effects on society. The program would run from 2009 to 2011.
According to Mrs. Santa Nantogma, CCFC Country Director for Ghana, the program focus on reducing the percentage of adolescents who opt for sex before the age of 15 by 14% and increase the percentage of men and women aged between 15 and 49 who would adopt the use of condoms by 28%. It would also seek to reduce the percentage of men and women aged between 15 and 49 who have had sex with multiple partners in the past twelve months by 14%.
CCFC's HIV/AIDS program will be partially funded by the Ghana AIDS Commission as part of the commission's Multi-Sectoral HIV/AIDS Programme (M-SHAP).
According to Medical Superintendent of the Tamle Central Hospital, Dr. Patrick Bampoe stated the ghana Health Service (GHS) knows taking voluntary counseling and testing services to the door steps of the people is the surest way of tackling HIV/AIDS. Dr. Bampoe, further stated that 22,000 people in the northern region have been tested. Due to the increasing importance of counseling and testing on how to fight AIDS, the number of testing and counseling centres in the region have increased from one to twelve.
